Bio

Reeve Coobs is a singer-songwriter from the south – specifically, from Charlotte, North Carolina. She creatively blends folk, pop, country, and rock into an original sound of her own. Her lyrics are smart and real, and her voice is rich and haunting and leaves you wanting more. Reeve's songs can sometimes be uncomfortably honest, but that is what makes her such a moving performer. She has a very powerful voice but unlike most voices you hear today, Reeve knows when to keep it soft and light. Her thoughtful lyrics and voice joined with her tasteful guitar playing makes for an extremely rare talent.  In 2005 Reeve won the Creative Loafing of Charlotte Reader’s Pick award for Best Female Vocalist.

The daughter of guitar maker Jack Coobs and ever-lovin' music fan Caydea, Reeve grew up immersed in music.  She started singing around the age of three and performing on stage a few years later.  In high school she joined the ecumenical touring show choir, The New Vibrations.  They toured all around The Carolinas and also as far as Texas, Florida, Chicago, and New York.  She and a few other "New Vibes" members formed the band Exit Up which she played with until she moved away for college.  She went to King College in Bristol, TN on a vocal scholarship.  She started writing more and more and playing with friends at local coffee shops.  She began to fall in love with the idea of becoming a "real" singer-songwriter.

In 2002 she left King and Bristol and moved to Charlotte to pursue her love of songwriting.  She got a job at The Evening Muse, Charlotte's premier listening room.  "The Muse is what really started my career, I have Joe and Lea to thank for everything.  I worked there almost every night and would play every open mic and every other chance I could get.  It was such a great way to learn about this crazy business.".  Eventually Reeve quit working at The Muse and started nannying and playing an average of two shows a week.

Reeve played with the popular all-gal band The Near Misses for four years.  They toured all over the south-east and released two records which can be found on iTunes and CD baby.  They also were the recipients of many awards including "Best Female Vocalist" Critics Pick for the 2008 Creative Loafing Best of Charlotte “Best Band” Readers’ Choice Award for the 2006 Creative Loafing Best of Charlotte: International Edition, "Best New Band" Award in the Arts & Entertainment category of the 2005 Creative Loafing Readers’ Choice Awards.

She is now fronting her own project which sometimes is just her and a guitar and sometimes a 5-piece band.  Reeve has been working hard with friend and producer Jeff Williams (Lodestar, gogoPilot) to create a unique new sound.  It doesn't stray too far from her original folksy-pop start it's just a louder and more mature sound.  "Jeff has been such a huge part of my songwriting these past few years.  He has really pushed me to be better and he's shown me how to mold a plain melody and lyrics into something interesting and beautiful.  I feel like we share the same brain sometimes, he'll record a guitar part over one of my songs and I swear it's exactly what was playing in my head while writing it." Reeve also sings backup and plays keyboard for Jeff's band, gogoPilot.

In 2008 Reeve became a registered Music Together teacher and teaches for Music Together of Charlotte.  She is the vocal director for Lake Forest Church in Huntersville, NC and is a part of The Tosco Sing-a-Long Choir.

Reeve has opened up for David Bromberg, Cheryl Wheeler, Bill Mallonee, Lucy Kaplansky, Anais Mitchell, and many more.  After the rain forced the 2009 Coca-Cola 600 race to postpone Reeve was asked to fill in and sing The National Anthem.  "That day was the most terrifying and amazing days of my life.  Singing in front of 167,000 people almost made me not do it, but I'm so glad I did because hearing and feeling 167,000 people applaud after you sing is something that I will never forget."  Reeve can also be heard singing around town with many fine folks including: Josh Daniel, Grey Brewster, Mike Strauss, Josh Panda, Etta Lea, John Dungan, Transmission Fields, Donna Duncan, and Jason Atkins.
